Later, as they began to plant and harvest crops, many of the Eastern tribes built homes out of the materials available around them, like mud or thatch. They planted beans, squash, and pumpkins, but corn or "maize" was the most important crop for most. The idea of growing corn might have come to them from the natives of Mexico.
