LOS ANGELES — Having made his mark at the World Cup and on the soccer fields of Europe and Japan, Keisuke Honda commands a large presence. Now he is aiming to expand it even further — to another continent, in fact.
The 29-year-old Japan and AC Milan star recently revealed he plans to open a soccer academy in the United States in 2016, with Los Angeles as the most likely location.
After holding a soccer clinic for primary school students in the city on Dec. 22, Honda said: “It’s important to carry out this plan while I’m still an active player. The sooner, the better.”
Honda has already launched a soccer academy in Japan, and the project will be his first push overseas. At the clinic last month, he instructed both local and Japanese children and came away with good impressions of the young U.S. players.
“I was surprised by how good the girls were — I suppose it could be because the women’s national team is strong. The boys also have great potential physically.”
Explaining why he has chosen to open a school in the United States, he continued, “If we bring in our philosophy on teaching them how to play, I think there’s a huge possibility of becoming the top team of the world.” (211 words)
