영어속독--Auditions to seek ‘Billy Elliot’ in Japan

리첫 2016. 2. 19. 10:23

Auditions will start this spring for the Japanese version of “Billy Elliot the Musical,” set to be staged in Tokyo and Osaka next year.

The selection process will last for about a year for the production, which will be put on by TBS, HoriPro Inc. and Umeda Arts Theater.

“Billy Elliot the Musical” is the theatrical version of the film “Billy Elliot.” The inspiring story centers around Billy, a young boy born in a British coal mining town who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer and works hard to get into a prestigious ballet school.

It was first performed in London in 2005 and became a hit on Broadway as well, winning 10 Tony Awards. Three boys who alternated in the title role in the Broadway production won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.

The musical is difficult to stage, because it requires a boy who can sing, do ballet and tap dance, and whose voice has not changed, as the protagonist is only 11 years old.

The Japanese production will therefore receive help from Tetsuya Kumakawa’s K-Ballet School in auditioning and training would-be performers.

The first phase of the auditions will be held in spring when the director and other key staff members arrive in Japan. Those who pass will receive free ballet and other lessons. The final cast will be decided through two further tests in summer and winter. Boys aged from about 8 to 13 are eligible to audition. The organizers are also looking for girls to play ballet school girls and other characters. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 6.
