The first animated movie was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was made in 1937. More than 750 artists drew the pictures that were used to make it. Now animated movies are made with computers. It is a lot faster to make an animated movie with computers. It is also a lot cheaper. That is why more animated movies are being made now. The first movie to be made only with computer animation was Toy Story. It was made in 1995, and was about a group of toys and their adventures. The same people who made Toy Story also made A Bug's Life (1998) and Monsters, Inc. (2001).
To make a great animated movie, good animation is necessary. But so is a good story. Shrek had both. It also had famous actors doing the voices of all the characters. They included Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy. Animated movies often have famous actors doing the voices. The Lion King had Matthew Broderick and Whoopi Goldberg. Toy Story had Tom Hanks, and Monsters, Inc. had Billy Crystal and John Goodman.
