영어속독(200단어)--Laughter
It's nine-thirty on Saturday evening and Susan Kelly is getting ready for work. She sits quietly in a bar, drinking water. She is very nervous. At ten o'clock she walks onto a stage. Three hundred people are watching her. For forty-five minutes she tells jokes. When she finishes, everybody is laughing.
Susan is a comedian. It is her job to be funny three nights a week. She has been a comedian for three years and she enjoys it very much. 'It's very exciting,' says Susan. 'It's good to make people happy.' But she always feels nervous before she goes on stage because it can be a hard job. If people don't laugh, she feels very bad.
Susan always had good sense of humor. At school she often told jokes and made her friends laugh. She loved watching comedians like Jim Carrey, and wanted to be like him when she grew up. 'At first I wanted to be a clown,' she says, 'because I loved their big red noses and funny clothes. But it's quite difficult to get a job as a clown!'
Susan got her first job as a comedian when she was twenty. 'I was terrible!' she says. 'Nobody laughed at my jokes. Afterwards I was very sad. I cried for two days!' But she didn't give up. She went back the next week and tried again. This time she wasn't so nervous. Everybody laughed, and Susan knew she would always be a comedian. (246 words)
