When a movie star like Julia Roberts wants to look her best, she goes to a make-up artist. Rick Baker is one of the best make-up artists in Hollywood. He has won five Academy Awards - the top award in the movie industry. But Rick doesn't always make Hollywood's stars look beautiful. He also turns them into animals, aliens, and monsters.
In his career, Rick has made a lot of monkeys! In 1976 he made the giant ape in King Kong. In 1984 he made the costumes for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. In 2001 he turned Helena Bonham Carter into an ape in Planet of the Apes. He made monsters for Michael Jackson's Thriller video in 1983. 1n 2000 he turned Jim Carrey into the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. But Rick is most famous for two particular movies. In 1996 he turned Eddie Murphy into The Nutty Professor. Then, in 1997, he used puppets to make the aliens in Men in Black.
Rick always wanted to make monsters. When he was young, he watched a movie called Frankenstein. In the movie, a doctor makes a frightening monster. After that, Rick wanted to be a doctor, too. Then, when he was ten, he learned about make-up artists and decided to find a job making monsters for the movies. For thirty years now, Rick has been one of Hollywood's top make-up artists.
