The period looks like a small dot ( . ). The period is the most common form of punctuation used to end a sentence in the English language. Periods are also used for abbreviations and website addresses.[마침표는 작은 점(.)과 똑같다. 마침표는 영어 문장이 끝날 때 구두법<punctuation>에서 가장 흔하게 사용되는 형태이다. 마침표는 또한 생략하거나 웹 주소를 표기할 때도 사용한다.]

When to use periods[마침표를 사용할 때]
1. We use a period at the end of sentences that are statements.[말로 되어 있는 설명문의 끝에 마침표를 사용한다.]
A statement is a sentence that states, or tells, something.[설명문이란 무엇인 가를 설명하거나 말하는 문장을 일컫는다.]

A command is a sentence that tells someone to do something.[명령은 누군가에게 뭔가를 하라고 말함을 뜻한다.]

An indirect question is a question that is said as a statement. It uses a period instead of a question mark.[간접 의문문은 질문을 평서문으로 표현하는데, 물음표 대신 마침표를 사용한다.]

How to use a period in sentences[문장에서 마침표를 사용하는 법]
1) Do not put a space before a period used to end a sentence.[문장이 끝나는 마침표 앞에 공백을 두면 안 된다.]
• Correct<맞음>: The shirt is blue.[셔츠가 파란 색이다.]
• Incorrect<틀림>: The shirt is blue( ).
2) Do put one space after the period if it is followed by another sentence.[마침표 뒤에 다른 문장이 시작될 때 한 칸을 띄어야 한다.]
• Correct<맞음>: I am driving to the city. The city is north of here.[나는 그 도시의 북쪽으로 운전하고 있다.]
• Incorrect<틀림>: I am driving to the city.The city is north of here.
• Incorrect<틀림>: I am driving to the city. The city is north of here.

1) If you do not use a period at the end of a sentence, each sentence will run into the next. That would create confusion for the speaker or reader. The period signals the end of a thought.[만일 여러분이 문장의 끝에 마침표를 사용하지 않으면, 각 문장이 다음 문장으로 바로 이어지게 된다. 그것이 연설가나 독자들에게 혼동을 줄 것이다. 마침표는 하나의 생각이 끝남을 알리는 신호이다.]

2) Abbreviations without periods would be random letters placed together without making a word. The period or periods in an abbreviation signal to the reader that it is a shortened form of a word or words.[마침표 없는 생략은 한마디 말도 없이 놓여 진 마구 쓴 편지와도 같다. 생략의 마침표는 독자에게 단어들의 생략된 형태를 나타내는 신호이다.]
3) Websites will not work without periods. You must place a period in all correct places for the internet addresses to be correct.[웹 주소는 마침표가 없으면 검색할 수가 없다. 여러분은 올바른 인터넷 주소를 제대로 찾으려면 반드시 마침표를 찍어야 한다.]
