Should I Understand Words from Context?[내가 문맥에서 단어를 이해해야 하나?]
Some teachers think it is best not to stop on every word, but to understand the words from the context.[어떤 선생들은 단어 마다 멈추는 것이 아니라, 문맥에서 단어를 이해하는 것이 최고라고 생각한다.]
That basically means, to guess what the word means, or to simply ignore it.[그것은 기본적으로, 그 단어의 의미가 무엇인지를 추측하는 것이며, 단지 무시할 뿐이다.]
This is false help.[이런 건 별로 도움이 못된다.]
It doesn't really help you in building vocabulary.[여러분의 어휘력 형성에 정말 도움이 안 된다.]
It can leave you with many words you don't really understand, or that you only think you understand.[그것은 여러분이 진정 이해하지 못하거나 이해했다고 생각하는 많은 단어를 남겨 놓았을 뿐이다.]
This can, and does, mess students up.[이것은 학생들에게 혼란을 일으킬 수 있으며, 실제로 혼란을 일으킨다.]
Here is an example(예문 하나):
A student reads the following sentence: "Marta has a parasol." Hmm… OK, what does that mean?[어떤 학생이 다음과 같은 문장을 읽는다고 하자. “마르타는 파라솔을 갖고 있다.” 흐~~~음... 좋아요, 근데 무슨 뜻이죠?]
You can guess all day long, but that won't necessarily get you to the right answer.[여러분은 온종일 생각하겠지만, 정답이 꼭 나온다고 보장할 수는 없다.]
You will probably remain unsure.[여러분은 아마도 불확실한 여운이 남아 있을 것이다.]
But this can be easily solved.[하지만 이것이 쉽게 해결될 수는 없다.]

You can use the dictionary.[여러분은 사전을 이용할 수도 있다.]
"Parasol" is a kind of umbrella that protects against the sun.[“파라솔”은 햇볕을 막아주는 일종의 우산이다.]
Ah, now it makes sense.[아, 이제 이해가 되네.]
"Marta has a parasol."[“마르타가 파라솔을 갖고 있다.”는 말이.]
Another example(또 다른 예):
My English teacher taught us there were words you had to understand, and other words which were not so important.[내 영어 선생이 우리에게, 우리가 이해해야만 하는 단어들은 가르쳤지만, 중요하지 않은 단어는 가르치지 않는다.]
So we shouldn't waste our time on understanding the less important words.[그래서 우리는 덜 중요한 단어를 이해하는 데에 우리의 시간을 낭비하지 않아야 한다는 것이다.]
We should kind of guess them.[우리는 일종의 착각을 하는 것이다.]
I was actually doing just that for a very long time.[나는 실제로 아주 오랫동안 그렇게 해왔다.]
It made me think I knew words, when I knew them wrong.[내가 그것이 틀렸다는 것을 알았을 때, 나로 하여금 내가 그 단어를 알게 되었다고 생각되게 했다.]
For example, as a child, I ran into the word "respect".[예를 들면, 내가 어렸을 때, 나는 “respect"라는 단어를 보았다.]
